“Sailor for a Day” Bay Exploration

Dive into our “sea chest” and examine artifacts that tell stories of the people and vessels that traveled the waters of San Francisco Bay. Learn about who inhabited this place through time, why they came, and how they got here. In this station, students will compare different eras of San Francisco’s maritime past and explore its rich history.

Learn to read a navigational chart. Orient themselves on the Bay including where they came from, where they are, and what is around them. Use coastal piloting techniques and simple mathematics to fix their position and complete other basic navigational exercises

Experience being a crewmember: steer, serve as lookout, and handle sails as appropriate. Follow directions carefully and seriously, and learn how to communicate and work together in a dynamic environment. See the bay as an active body of water —environmentally and culturally—to which they are connected.
