Sail. Explore. Learn.

Call of the Sea is an educational non-profit that connects people to the sea and maritime traditions. Our teaching platforms are the 82′ schooner Seaward, and the 132′ brigantine Matthew Turner. We aim to empower youth of all backgrounds through experiential education on the water. From our programs, students will:

  • Develop curiosity and engage with the ship and the bay.

  • Develop a connection with environmental and cultural aspects of the bay.

  • Gain an appreciation for maritime traditions, including teamwork.

  • Gain new perspective and return with the sense of having completed a voyage.

Call of the Sea is building a new educational tall ship, Matthew Turner, to increase our capacity for youth education under sail. This new ship will enable us to provide experiential education to three times as many students beginning in 2019.

Ships are the nearest things to dreams that hands have ever made.

At Call of the Sea, we seek to serve people of all backgrounds and we aim to make our programs accessible to under-served youth.

In 2017, we had 5,000 passengers aboard Seaward, most of which were students that sailed from Sausalito, San Francisco, Berkeley, Alameda, Redwood City and Monterey. Students came from schools and student groups from all over the bay and ages ranged from five to eighteen years old.
