On April 11 a group of 5th graders from the California School for the Deaf in Fremont enjoyed their very first sail on our schooner Seaward.  It was a picture-perfect spring day.  They are signing sailing and sailboat!  Teachers have said these students, as well as public school special ed students, do not often get to take the same kinds of field trips that other students take.

We also had the privilege, in the summer of 2023, to provide a group of deaf high school students with a 4 day overnight program. The crew learned a bit of ASL and other techniques to communicate sailing terms visually.

Call of the Sea is honored and inspired to serve these special students by providing them with equitable access to the ocean environment and the joys of experiencing it on a sailboat.

We received a thank you message and photos from the principal of the Fremont School for the Deaf, along with student thank you letters.  Enjoy!

On behalf of the California School for the Deaf and 5th grade class, we want to express our deepest appreciation for giving a wonderful opportunity to our 5th grade students. Without doubt, the experience was beyond their expectations and that’s something they will forever remember about this trip. The students continue to talk about it today!
