Sail the electric Matthew Turner Tall Ship August 14, learn more about sea level rise in the Bay, climate change impacts, and what we can do about it.

According to the experts, we can expect 3-6 ft rise in sea level by the end of the century in the Bay area, displacing over 500,000 people and costing billions in adaptation, property and infrastructure changes. Besides adaptation, as champions and thought leaders, we can model and promote how we mitigate climate change now, especially in how we transport and how we migrate our dirty diesel marine vessels to clean regenerative propulsion.

Enter the Matthew Turner, the nation’s first electric tall ship, a beautiful 100 ft brigantine 2 masted ship modelled after those built here 120 years ago. The ship carries 11 sails (7,200 square feet) which are used to generate wind-powered electricity. It has two 200KW electric motors powered by batteries recharged while under sail from the propeller; 200 KWH banks of lithium batteries for power storage, and two 265 KW bio-fuel generators. Also, it was built locally by the nonprofit Call of the Sea (COTS) craftsmen and hundreds of volunteers over six years with sustainably forested lumber (FSC).  Berthed at the Bay Model in Sausalito, it is used for on-the-water environmental youth education. Those willing will be able to participate in setting and striking sails.  We will get a VIP tour of the boat and her systems. Depending on the wind and tides, we’ll go out under the Golden Gate Bridge.

Included in this year’s sail will be a catered gourmet lunch by Davy Jones Deli in Sausalito, an award-winning sandwich house (Small Business of the Year, Best Vegetarian in Marin. This is also a day to celebrate social bonds and great conversations with our sustainability tribe, to connect with old friends and make new ones. We will host a welcome coffee mixer from 9-9:45am prior to boarding with guest elected speakers to discuss key issues affecting the Bay waters.  Marin Supervisor Stephanie Moulton-Peters will brief us on local government actions.  After the sail from 10-1pm, we have lined up a private tour and exhibition by a sea level rise and Bay water expert ranger, who will use the amazing Bay model to show how sea and Bay level rise will affect Marin and the Bay region. To wrap it up, we have a no host Reception afterwards at a local venue.
