Youth Voyage on Matthew Turner

July 14-18, a group of youth ages 12-15 boarded the ship for 5 days and 4 nights of adventure.

They learned to climb the rig and hoist the sails and helped with all the daily chores that keep the ship running smoothly.  A couple were past summer campers, who started sailing with Call of the Sea at age 10 and 11, and have now graduated to advanced programs.  Other youth were new to sailing or had only sailed skiffs.

The adventure started with sail training and a practice day in San Francisco Bay.  On day two they sailed to Drakes Bay for an overnight, then sailed to Half Moon Bay on day three.  Half Moon Bay allowed for some time on shore, tide pooling and going to town for salt water taffy, as well as sailing our small gaff rigged yawl.  Day five was the return sail to Sausalito, which was blessed with sunshine after the past few foggy days.

Testimonial from a parent: Our child had a truly memorable experience sailing. They came home full of stories and excitement, and we are grateful for the incredible learning and adventure you provided.  We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire crew — everyone was so kind, supportive, and encouraging. Samuel and Nathan especially loved the staff and often talk about how much they enjoyed spending time with them.  We really appreciate all the hard work your team puts into making these voyages safe, educational, and inspiring.”   Gideon Liang
