It was a typical foggy, cool, and breezy morning in June on San Francisco Bay, but it was atypical to see brigantine Matthew Turner out at 8 am, with almost all of her canvas flying, to welcome the USCG Eagle. For the first time since 2008, the 295-foot, three-masted barque, used as a training vessel for future officers of the United States Coast Guard, returned to San Francisco.
Known as “America’s Tall Ship,” the majestic Eagle is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes and the only active square-rigger in U.S. government service.
Call of the Sea was delighted to be a part of the flotilla which celebrated her arrival and also to be among the guests invited to witness the change of command ceremony on board. Capt. Kristopher Ensley relieved Capt. Jessica Rozzi-Ochs as commanding officer of the Eagle during the ceremony, which was presided over by Vice Adm. Nathan Moore, commander of Coast Guard Atlantic Area. This ceremony marks the transfer of total responsibility and authority from one individual to another. It is a time-honored tradition conducted before the assembled crew, as well as honored guests and dignitaries, to formally demonstrate the continuity of authority within a command.
The Eagle is now at sea for a month-long training voyage in the Pacific Northwest, but she will be back. If you missed the opportunity to witness the impressive sight of her coming under the Golden Gate Bridge, there will be another chance on July 25th when Call of the Sea plans to welcome the Eagle’s return. You are invited to be among the passengers to enjoy this unique early morning sail onboard Matthew Turner. Get your tickets here.
There is another opportunity to be on Matthew Turner after dark to experience the 4th of July fireworks in Sausalito. Our regular Friday evening sunset sail will be extended to include a close-up on the water view of the Independence Day celebration.
Come join us on the water in July!

Join us to celebrate the future and sustain the legacy! A bold vision sparked the creation of brigantine Matthew Turner. But it was the dedication of countless volunteers and generous supporters that brought it to life and transformed it into the life-changing floating classroom it is today. Together with the schooner Seaward, these two sailing ships are powerful symbols of what is possible when community, purpose, and perseverance come together. Now, in our 41st year, Call of the Sea invites you to help shape what comes next.
