“Launching a Sailing Legacy with the Brigantine Matthew Turner”
Featuring:
- Executive Director Carla Thorson
- Board Chair Steven Woodside
- Founder Alan Olson
It took seven years and the dedication of countless volunteers and supporters to do what many said couldn’t be done—build a wooden, traditionally rigged 132-foot brigantine on the shores of San Francisco Bay. Launched in 2017 and completed in 2020, the Matthew Turner now sails regularly alongside the 82-foot schooner Seaward, which proudly celebrates 20 years with Call of the Sea this year
Together, these vessels serve as floating classrooms, expanding ocean access, maritime education, and environmental stewardship for more than 5,000 young people each year. In 2024 alone, Call of the Sea vessels each set sail 240 times, welcoming more than 7,000 participants of all ages aboard.
Come hear how we built a ship—and what it takes to keep sailing, inspire tomorrow’s ocean advocates, and build educational programs for the future.
Location: St. Francis Yacht Club. This event is open to nonmembers as well as members.
